Birdwatching is fun, but when they turn your patio into a poop parade, it's time to send them packing!
Birds sing a sweet song, but it can become messy quickly when they take over your space.
Birds may pose several dangers: they are filled with parasites and pests (think fleas and lice), they can contribute to the spread of allergens, they can cause an unhygienic environment (just think of bird poop!), and they can also cause structural damage by nesting in buildings. Birds can also make your beautiful space messy, affecting the aesthetic appeal by shedding feathers, droppings and pieces of broken nests.
You can get some cats to help you out, or even a falcon or two, but it may just be easier to ask us to help you get these feathered friends relocated.
How to know if you have a problem with birds
Want to know if you may have a problem with birds? Here are a few tell-tale signs:
Frequent sightings of bird flocks
If you notice large groups of birds congregating on your roof, ledges, or nearby trees, it could be a sign that they are considering nesting in or around your property.
Bird droppings
A lot of it (called guano) in specific areas, especially beneath perches or nesting sites, are a clear indicator of bird presence. Not only are droppings unsightly, but they can also pose health risks and cause damage to surfaces.
Noise disturbances
Excessive bird vocalizations—such as chirping or squawking—especially during breeding season, can signal that birds are nesting nearby. If the noise disrupts your peace and quiet, it’s time to investigate further.
Blocked ventilation systems
Birds may nest in ventilation systems or chimneys, leading to blockages that can affect air quality and safety in your home or business.
Nesting materials
Look for scattered feathers, twigs, or other nesting materials around your property. These can often be found near gutters, eaves, or in sheltered areas where birds may attempt to build nests.
Feathers and debris
Finding feathers or debris around your property is a strong sign that birds are roosting or nesting nearby. This can lead to blockages in drainage systems if left unchecked.
DIY to keep birds away
If you suspect you have a problem with birds, there are a few suggestions you can implement to deter birds from nesting on your property:
- Seal access points. Block off any gaps or holes with board or netting.
- Hang shiny objects, as birds are often deterred by shiny, moving objects.
- Install bird spikes on ledges, rooflines and gutters.
- Install motion-activated sprinklers that spray water when birds approach, scaring them away.
- Keep your property clean. Trim trees and bushes to reduce potential nesting sites, and remove food sources to reduce their interest.
