Bees: Endangered and Dangerous

Honey bees are a protected species; we don’t want to kill them. They’re essential to our planet’s health! If you do kill honey bees, it carries a hefty fine.

So what do you do if you have a bee infestation? It’s not just a buzzkill; it can also be a serious safety issue:

Stings and Allergic Reactions: Bees can sting, and for some people, those stings can be life-threatening. If you or a family member has a bee allergy, an infestation is a major risk. Even if you're not allergic, multiple stings can be painful and potentially dangerous.
Property Damage: Bees can cause significant damage to your home. They build hives in walls, attics, or chimneys, which can lead to structural issues and costly repairs. Honeycombs can seep honey into walls, attracting other pests and causing more problems.
Attract Unwanted Guests: Bees attract other pests like rodents or insects that feed on honey or beeswax. This can lead to a whole new level of pest control issues.

Dead Bees. Finding dead bees around your home, especially near windows or doors, might suggest that there's a nest nearby.

DIY to keep bees away

Bees are wonderful, but you might not want them setting up shop on your property. Here are some tips to discourage bees from nesting on your property:

Seal All Entry Points: Bees can squeeze into tiny openings, so make sure to seal any cracks or holes in your building's exterior. Use caulk or expanding foam to block their entry points.
Keep your trash cans sealed. This will prevent bees that scavenge for food.
Remove Attractants: Bees are drawn to sweet substances and moisture. Keep your property free of sugary spills, and ensure that your gutters are clear and functioning properly to prevent water accumulation.
Trim Back Vegetation: Keep trees and bushes trimmed back from your home. Bees often nest in vegetation, so reducing their access can help deter them.
Use Bee-Deterrent Plants: Some plants, like mint or lemongrass, are known to repel bees. Planting these around your property might help keep bees away.
Install Bee-Proof Screens: If you have vents or chimneys, install screens to prevent bees from entering and nesting inside.
Regular Inspections: Keep an eye out for signs of bee activity, like buzzing sounds or bees entering specific areas. Early detection can help prevent a full-blown infestation.
